Overview

What are dental crowns?

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It restores the tooth’s shape, size, strength and appearance.

Crowns protect weak or cracked teeth, rebuild broken ones, cover teeth after a root canal and sit on top of dental implants.

Is it right for you?

Who dental crowns are for

  • A tooth is broken or cracked.
  • A tooth is badly worn down.
  • A tooth has a large filling that needs support.
  • You have had a root canal.
  • A tooth is discolored or misshapen.

The first step is an exam and X-rays with a dentist in our network, who confirms whether a crown, a veneer or another treatment fits best.

The process

How getting dental crowns abroad works

Crowns take one trip of about a week. The lab makes your crowns while you are there.

  1. One trip

5 to 7 days in your destination

    1. Exam and plan

X-rays and an exam. If the nerve is damaged, a root canal comes first.

    2. Preparation

The tooth is shaped so the crown fits over it, and you wear a temporary crown.

    3. Scan

A digital scan or impression goes to the lab, which makes your crown in a few days.

    4. Fitting

The crown is checked for fit, bite and color, then cemented in place.

Your clinic confirms the exact plan and timing after reviewing your X-rays.

Crown materials

Your dentist recommends one based on where the tooth is and how much it has to withstand.

Zirconia
The strongest option, ideal for back teeth and bridges. Modern zirconia looks natural too.
E.max (lithium disilicate)
Very natural and translucent, a common choice for front teeth.
Porcelain fused to metal
A proven, lower-cost option. A thin dark line can show at the gum over time.

FAQ

Questions about dental crowns

Anything else? Our team answers every message.

Crown or veneer?

A veneer covers only the front of a healthy tooth to change how it looks. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when the tooth is damaged, weak or has had a root canal.

Do I need a root canal before a crown?

Only if the nerve of the tooth is infected or damaged. Your dentist checks this on the X-rays and, if needed, does the root canal on the same trip.

Will my crown match my other teeth?

Yes. The shade is matched to your neighboring teeth. If you want to whiten your teeth, do it before your trip so the crown matches the new color.

How long do crowns last?

Usually 10 to 15 years or more. Good hygiene, regular checkups and a night guard if you grind your teeth help them last longer.

How much do crowns cost in Mexico?

Clinics in our network start well below U.S. prices, which typically run $1,000 to $2,500 per tooth. Each clinic sends you a free, personalized quote.
